Abies grandis
The Grand Fir is a large evergreen tree with a straight trunk and a conical crown. It features flat, needle-like leaves that are dark green on top and silvery underneath.
The Grand Fir produces cylindrical cones that can be 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) long. These cones start green and mature to a brownish colour, eventually disintegrating to release seeds.
The pollen cones are smaller, cylindrical structures found in the upper branches of the tree. They are generally yellowish and produce pollen, which is essential for fertilising the female cones.
The foliage of the Grand Fir consists of soft, dark green needles that are 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) long. These needles are arranged in a spiral pattern along the branches and have a pleasant citrus scent when crushed.
Preferring moist, well-drained soils, the Grand Fir thrives in cooler, shaded environments and is commonly found in river valleys and along stream banks in the Pacific Northwest of North America.
It provides crucial habitat for various wildlife species, including birds and insects, and contributes to forest biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
The wood is soft, light, and straight-grained, making it valuable for construction, plywood, and paper products.
The tree is resilient to many pests and diseases, though it can occasionally be affected by certain fungal infections, demonstrating its overall hardiness.
