Amelanchier Ă— lamarckii
Snowy Mespilus typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 meters (6 to 13 feet), with a similar spread. It has a bushy, upright growth habit and can be grown as either a large shrub or a small tree.
The plant produces small, round berries that ripen to a deep purple or black colour. These berries are edible and can be used in jams, jellies, and pies.
In early spring, before the leaves fully unfurl, the Snowy Mespilus produces clusters of five-petaled, star-shaped white flowers.
The leaves are oval-shaped and have finely serrated edges. They emerge bronze-coloured in the spring, turning green and then red/orange autumn.
It prefers well-drained soil and can thrive in a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils.
It provides food for numerous wildlife but it is particularly popular among birds due to its berries.
The fruits are traditionally used to make jams and jellies, or eaten fresh.
The flowers are well known because they look similar to snowflakes hence the trees name.
