Burton Constable Holiday Park is home to an arboretum (a botanical garden devoted to trees) and picturesque woodland where you can explore nature onsite.

If you enjoy being in the presence of nature and want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, why not venture on a wonderful woodland walk at our luxury holiday park?

The Arboretum: Biodiversity and Conservation

The arboretum at Burton Constable Holiday Park was planted by our founder John Constable.

The design was based on the development of the formal garden in Europe like Versailles, Hampton Court, and the baroque splendours of Het Loo ‒ built by William of Orange between 1684 and the end of the 17th century.

It is primarily a living collection we can constantly build on. In addition, it is a showcase around which visitors may wander at leisure, observing plants with their multiplicity of shape, form, colour, and seasonal effects. A woodland walk in East Yorkshire to rival the finest wild gardens of Europe.

The conservation aspect is also important – some of the plants are rarely seen in the wild, and grassland and wildflower meadows have been included to encourage and conserve local flora and fauna.

Subsequent to Mr C’s arboretum, we have continued our environmental mission. We have been proud winners of the David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award for the last 10 years. Wandering through the arboretum, our bluebell wood, or many of the other nature paths in the park, you will see that we are home to many different wildlife species. We even keep friendly bees that help pollinate our plant life. Swans swim with their ugly ducklings on the lake; nestled within this peaceful countryside, you might hear an owl hooting from your holiday accommodation as you drift off to sleep. Our luxury East Yorkshire holiday park and arboretum is the perfect place for you to retreat into nature within twenty minutes of Hull and Beverley.

Woodland Walks: 21st-century impact from a 17th-century design

There are plenty of advantages to getting into nature and exploring. If you are looking for a way to relax, escape, and improve your health, an East Yorkshire woodland walk might be the perfect activity for you.

Top 5 benefits of woodland walks

1. Improve physical health

Research across the world has shown that walks in nature can improve physical health and boost your overall quality of life. This is supported by the fact that many GPs conduct “green prescribing” where they advise patients to spend time with nature.

Woodland walks are a great way of getting active and keeping fit, getting the heart pumping and blood moving. Going on a brisk woodland walk can help to maintain bone health, balance your blood pressure and blood sugar levels, provide you with an increased level of vitamin D, and reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

2. Boost mental wellbeing

Research has also shown that walking can have fantastic benefits for your mental health. Going on one of East Yorkshire’s picturesque woodland walks (see our previous blog post for more inspiration) can help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, releasing endorphins and helping to boost your mood.

According to an article published by Mental Health Today, “woodlands and activities that take place in woodlands such as biking, hiking, nature walks, and mindfulness walks could save £141m in costs associated with mental health services, including GP visits, prescriptions, inpatient care, social services and even working days lost to mental health issues.”

3. Stimulate the brain

According to The Woodland Trust, each footstep you take can increase blood flow to the brain. This can help to improve your memory and boost cognitive function. Additionally, the fact that there is so much to see, hear, smell, and touch within our woodlands offers great stimulation for the senses.

4. Improve the quality of sleep

A brisk woodland walk in East Yorkshire can help to prepare your mind and body for a great night’s sleep. The natural lighting in the outdoors can help to regulate your sleeping pattern, encouraging your brain to release the right levels of melatonin at sunset to facilitate a perfect night’s sleep.

5. Increase creativity

Research from The Woodland Trust suggests that walking in natural environments can put us into a meditative state, making us calm and reflective and allowing us to become more present, escaping the stresses and distractions of everyday life. This state can provide an effective boost of creativity, enabling us to solve problems and think about topics with a fresh, clear perspective. The flora, fauna, and beautiful scenes on offer can also be a great source of inspiration.
