Did you know?
The summer holidays are a tradition that originated from the agricultural calendar. In the past, children were needed to help with farming tasks during the busiest times of the year, such as planting and harvesting seasons. As a result, schools would close for an extended period during the summer months to accommodate these agricultural needs.
Following Summer, the next holiday is the October Half-Term. October half-term, typically occurs during the middle of October and ends nearer to Halloween.
Fun Summer Facts
Dog Days
The phrase ‘dog days of summer,’ referring to hot summer days, actually originated from the ancient Romans’ ‘dies caniculares,’ which started in late July when the star Sirius (known as the Dog Star) rose just before the Sun. The Romans believed Sirius, being exceptionally bright, added heat to the sun and caused sweltering summer days.
