The Arboretum at Burton Constable is a champion of wildlife conservation in East Yorkshire, nurturing its natural landscape since the late 2000s. Here, we delve into the story of how the Arboretum came into existence and the journey that has shaped its vibrant and diverse ecosystem.
A Spark Of Inspiration
At the request of Mr. C, the arboretum plans were thoughtfully crafted by Stephen Bean Associates in December 2007.
The design was based on the development of the ‘formal garden’ in Europe like Versailles, Hampton Court, and the baroque splendours of Het Loo.
Meticulous Design
Several designs and plans were drawn up by Stephen Bean Associates, whilst working alongside Mr. C to guide each creative detail in the choice of species and layout of the land.

This collaborative process captures the rich culture and history of Burton Constable while also achieving the awe-inspiring appeal of renowned formal gardens.
Rooms, Avenues and The Burton Constable Hall
These plans divide the arboretum into rooms and avenues, each reflecting a corresponding space in Burton Constable Hall, an 18th-century stately home in East Yorkshire. The intention is to subtly nod to the historical charm of Burton Constable Hall, integrating it seamlessly into the arboretum’s natural setting.
Storytelling Through Landscape
Each of the 200 species of trees was carefully curated to enrich the story of Burton Constable. Sometimes, it’s as simple as honoring Mr. C’s favorite fruit, while other times, it extends to obscure international connections within the Burton Constable Estate.
Part Of The Family
Today, Burton Constable Holiday Park remains a proud family-run establishment. Park trustee Jack Straker cherishes memories of planting trees during the Arboretum’s original development. In recent years, Jack and the holiday park team have continued to rejuvenate the Arboretum by planting new trees and integrating new technology to enhance exploration of this natural sanctuary.
The Arboretum is a valued part of the family legacy.
